Documentary series which uses film and eyewitness accounts from both sides of the conflict that divided Spain in the years leading up to World War Two, also placing it in its international context.
The Spanish Civil War Season 1 aired on January 7th, 1983.
Season 1 Episodes
1. Prelude to Tragedy
First in a six-part series. Looks at the background to the war: the five turbulent years that led to the crisis in July 1936 when a group of generals rose to overthrow the Republican government.
2. Revolution, Counter-Revolution & Terror
Second in a six-part series. Considers the fact that half the Spanish Civil War’s victims died behind the lines, not in battle, but by political execution.
3. Battleground for Idealists
The people who went to fight in the Spanish Civil War including the International Brigade, the Nazi Condor Legion and Italian Blackshirts, and the help supplied by the Soviet Union.
4. Franco and the Nationalists
Part four of a documentary series. This part deals with the character of Franco and the make up of the Nationalist side. It includes footage of the Spanish Civil War and interviews with participants.
5. Inside the Revolution
Part five of a documentary series. This part deals with the activities of Communists, Socialists, and Anarchists on the Republican side.
6. Victory and Defeat
A chronicle of the fall of Barcelona and Madrid and the eventual victory of General Franco's army in 1939.
