Rory is a small-stakes gambler and rent collector. He wants to get into a big stakes game despite being warned against it. His sweetheart, Janie, doesn't approve of his gambling. Jimmy, his brother, wants them to invest in a shipyard.

While Rory convalesces, John George gets in trouble with the law. Miss Kean takes over for her ailing father. Janie heads to France, with her employers, with tragic consequences.
