Special Group 2019 Plot
The 2019 Rio de Janeiro Special Group parades took place between March 3rd and 4th, 2019, at the Marquês de Sapucaí, with exclusive broadcast on TV Globo. The Special Group schools in 2019 were, in order of presentation: Império Serrano, Viradouro, Grande Rio, Salgueiro, Beija-Flor, Imperatriz, Unidos da Tijuca, São Clemente, Vila Isabel, Portela, União da Ilha, Paraíso do Tuiuti, and Mangueira. The grand champion was Estação Primeira de Mangueira, with the theme "História para ninar gente grande" (A Story to Lull Grown-Ups to Sleep), which celebrated forgotten heroes of Brazilian history. The other champion schools were Viradouro, Vila Isabel, Portela, Salgueiro, and Mocidade, and the school relegated to the Série A (second division) was Imperatriz Leopoldinense (along with Império Serrano).

1. Império Serrano - Special Group (RJ) - Full parade from 03/03/2019
The theme, "And Life, and Life, what is it? Tell me, my brother!", is based on Gonzaguinha's hit song "O que é? O que é?". The song will be sung on the Avenue.
2. Viradouro - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
The storyline “Viraviradouro”, created by carnival designer Paulo Barros, is about imagination and fantastic stories that are part of childhood.
3. Grande Rio - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
“Who hasn’t…? Let him who is without sin cast the first stone!”, by carnival designers Renato and Márcia Lage, proposes a discussion about education, coexistence, and the Brazilian “jeitinho” (a way of getting around rules or regulations).
4. Salgueiro - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
The school presents a storyline about the orixá Xangô, responsible for lightning, thunder, and fire. Carnival designer Alex de Souza will recount the devotion to the entity, responsible for a battle against evil and for justice.
5. Beija-Flor - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
The storyline “Those who haven’t seen it will see…The fables of Beija-flor” tells the story of its 70 years of carnival.
6. Imperatriz - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
Imperatriz brings to the Avenue the theme "Hey, give me some money," which talks about money, with a humorous critique of ambition and politics.
7. Unidos da Tijuca - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 3, 2019
"Each monkey in its own tree. Oh, my father, give me the bread so I don't die of hunger" conveys a message of hope for better days through the history and symbolism of bread.

The first night of samba school parades featured: Império Serrano, Viradouro, Grande Rio, Salgueiro, Beija-Flor, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, and Unidos da Tijuca.
9. São Clemente - Special Group (RJ) - Full parade from 04/03/2019
The plot of “E o samba sambou” is a re-edition from 1990. A humorous critique of the commercialization of samba. The school will also fondly remember the carnivals of yesteryear.
10. Vila Isabel - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 4, 2018
"In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Saints, Vila sings the city of Pedro" recounts the legacy of Petrópolis, a city built by immigrants and which became known as the imperial city.
11. Portela - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 4, 2019
“In the ultra-modern Madureira, I will always hear a Sabiá singing” pays homage to the singer Clara Nunes, highlighting the diversity and relevance of her biography and repertoire.
12. Paraíso do Tuiuti - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 4, 2019
"The Savior of the Nation" is about the story of Ioiô the goat, an animal that gained fame on the streets of Fortaleza and will be the main honoree of Azul e Amarela de São Cristóvão.
13. Mangueira - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 4, 2019
“História pra ninar gente grande” (A Story to Lull Grown-Ups to Sleep) presents a narrative of “missing pages” from Brazilian history, rethinking official narratives taught to Brazilians over generations.
14. União da Ilha - Special Group (RJ) - Full parade from 04/03/2019
"The poetic duel between Rachel and Alencar on the veranda of heaven" brings the culture of Ceará closer to the fictional encounter of two icons of Ceará literature.
15. Mocidade - Special Group (Rio de Janeiro) - Full parade from March 4, 2019
“I Am Time. Time is Life” is about time and its workings. Mocidade will show the relationship between humanity and the counting of the passage of time.

The second night of parades brought together the samba schools: São Clemente, Vila Isabel, Portela, União da Ilha, Paraíso do Tuiuti, Mangueira and Mocidade.
