You probably know Friday Night Lights," but the versatile actor has appeared in everything from "The Normal Heart" to "John Carter." Next up is "Only the Brave," based on the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshot elite firefighters. Before you check out Taylor's new movie, get to know a little bit more about him.

1. Oh, Canada

Taylor Kitsch was born on April 8, 1981, in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

2. Humble Beginnings

Taylor and his brothers were raised by his single mom, Susan, in a trailer park.

3. Ice King

The actor played hockey for years and joined the BCHL's Langley Hornets until a bad knee injury ended his athletic career.

4. Tough Times

Kitsch has revealed that there was a time when he was homeless on the streets of New York City for a number of weeks before getting on his feet. He later lived in his car for months in Los Angeles prior to hitting it big.

5. Model Behavior

Taylor took modeling gigs for brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Diesel.

6. Rocky Start

Taylor told EW that he was so terrible in one of his first auditions during pilot season, that he actually had to stop and admit how bad he was doing. He also had to embarrassingly ask to start over.

7. Clear Eyes, Full Heart

Taylor auditioned for the role that made him famous, Tim Riggins in "Friday Night Lights," on tape. He told The Daily Beast how he got into it, revealing, "I found Texan beers, a cooler, and had the long hair." Despite the Canadian accent, he nailed down the part.

8. Texas Forever

Even though "Friday Night Lights" ended in 2011, that doesn't mean Taylor left the Lone Star State for good. He bought land in Austin and built a home there.

9. But What He Really Wants to Do Is...

Kitsch got behind the camera for a short film called "The Pieces," which he is planning on turning into a feature.
