Super Bowl 2015 Movie Trailers, Ranked From Best to Worst

Tim Hayne
February 1, 2015 - 1 min read

1. 'Tomorrowland' (May 22)

The first teaser for Brad Bird's futuristic science fiction tale was alluring but elliptical, almost to a fault (do you expect anything less from a project coauthored by "Lost" mastermind Damon Lindelof?) This ad, in only 30 seconds, somehow intensifies the mystery while shedding a little bit of light on the actual story (more on that soon). As a kooky inventor-turned-savior, George Clooney's casual delivery of the line "You wanna go?" is so simple and affecting that we almost screamed "YES!" at the TV. (Okay, we did scream at the TV. But everyone else was too!)

2. 'Jurassic World' (June 12)

Again: we knew that the park would be open in this sequel, starring Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt, but the particulars of what the scary new monster would be and what kind of havoc said monster would cause was left pretty vague. And this new spot doesn't spell anything out, but does suggest some widespread chaos and looks really, really awesome.

3. 'Furious 7' (April 3)

Coming so soon after the "Tomorrowland" trailer, which touted it being "from the director of 'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,'" this trailer seemed like a direct response. "Mission: Impossible," of course, featured Tom Cruise dangling off the side of the tallest building in the world (the Burj Khalifa in Dubai), whereas this trailer showed a car driving between two similar skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi. While we were hoping for a return to more naturalism, as far as live action cartoons go, this looks ridiculously fun.

4. 'Terminator: Genisys' (July 1)

While we're still not entirely sure what is going on with this reboot/sequel to the popular franchise (just how many Arnold Schwarzeneggers are in this thing?), this clip is certainly the most energetic and exciting glimpse of the new movie yet, with a few cool new bits. Plus, seeing Khaleesi (Emilia Clarke) as Sarah Connor will never get old.

5. 'Pitch Perfect 2' (May 15)

JUST GIVE IT TO US ALREADY YOU MONSTERS.

6. 'Minions' (July 10)

The Minions, those sexless, pill-shaped helpers with the unintelligible language and love of dance, are the most undeniably entertaining aspect of the "Despicable Me" films, so this spin-off film could be really something. Sadly this spot didn't feature any actual animation (we can't wait to see the film's period setting) but it was still a hoot.

7. 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water' (February 6)

This was a cute bit of counter programming (and the movie is really weird and great); not sure it was the best use of untold millions of marketing dollars but we still liked seeing it!

8. 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (February 13)

We still can't, um, get excited about this movie (an adaptation of the best-selling mom-core novel that began life as sexually explicit "Twilight" fan fiction), but the "Fantasies Provoked: Countless" is pretty great and goes a long way in advancing the idea that this movie is actually supposed to be sexy.

9. 'Seventh Son' (February 6)

You've got to give Universal credit for trying to remind people, one last time, that this is actually coming out (after countless delays, reschedules, and the film jumping from one studio to another).

10. 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2' (February 20)

Deflated ball and Patriots jokes? Sounds about right for this Rob Coddry-led sequel (also starring Clark Duke, Adam Scott and Craig Robinson) that nobody was exactly screaming for.

11. 'Ted 2' (June 26)

This is about a minute-and-a-half shorter than the "Ted 2" theatrical trailer, and it still has Mark Wahlberg and the talking bear (once again voiced by co-writer/director Seth MacFarlane).
