It's been almost 40 years since we first saw Han, Luke and Leia on the big screen. As they return to theaters with "The Force Awakens," let's catch up with the stars of the original trilogy.

Harrison Ford ("Han Solo")

Harrison Ford ("Han Solo")

Ford had been a struggling Hollywood actor and carpenter-to-the-stars for more than a decade when, at 34, the role of Han Solo made him an overnight success. His reward was another iconic role in a George Lucas saga: Indiana Jones. In the 1980s and '90s, Ford became one of the biggest box office draws in history, with hits that included "Witness" (his only Oscar nomination to date), "The Fugitive," and two films in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series -- "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" -- where he played the heroic CIA agent Jack Ryan. Now 73, his drawing power has dimmed in recent years, though he's set to reprise another iconic role -- Rick Deckard -- in the sequel to 1982's "Blade Runner."

Carrie Fisher ("Leia Organa")

The daughter of showbiz royals Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Carrie Fisher was born to play a princess. She was 20 when 1977's "Family Guy" and had a memorable, Emmy-nominated guest spot on "30 Rock" as Liz Lemon's comedy-writing idol.

Mark Hamill ("Luke Skywalker")

Hamill was a little-known TV actor when "Criminal Minds" and both CBS and CW's "The Flash" (as the Trickster). In addition to reprising the role of Luke Skywalker in "The Force Awakens," the 64-year-old Hamill is due to voice the Joker again next year in a production of "Batman: The Killing Joke," based on the celebrated Alan Moore graphic novel.

Billy Dee Williams ("Lando Calrissian")

At 43, Williams had already been a celebrated leading man for a decade, in such films as "Star Wars Rebels."

James Earl Jones ("Darth Vader")

Jones was a Broadway leading man and well-known movie character actor when, at age 46, he first played Darth Vader in "Star Wars Rebels."

Frank Oz ("Yoda")

John Ratzenberger ("Major Bren Derlin")

Yes, before he became TV's most famous mailman, the 33-year-old Ratzenberger wore another uniform as a Rebel officer on the planet Hoth in "Cheers." Now, Ratzenberger is known as Pixar's good luck charm. He's voiced a role in every Pixar feature, from Hamm the piggy bank in 1995's "Toy Story" to Earl in the current "The Good Dinosaur." Now 68, Ratzenberger will reprise his "Finding Nemo" role as a school of fish in next year's "Finding Dory."
