Sigourney Weaver has been a dominating force in movies for nearly four decades. In fact, her work has landed her multiple Oscar nominations and two Golden Globe wins.  While Weaver might seem like she can take on the world, there is one thing that truly terrifies her. Here are 11 things you probably don't know about the actress.

1. New York State of Mind

Weaver is a New York girl at heart! She was born Susan Alexandra Weaver in Manhattan, on October 8th, 1949.

2. A 'Great' Inspiration

Why did the actress change her name to Sigourney? Turns out, she was inspired to do so in 1963 after reading "The Great Gatsby."

3. Following in Her Parents Footsteps

It's certainly no surprise that Weaver has a successful career in the industry. Her father, Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, was the President of NBC, and her mother, Elizabeth Inglis, was an English actress.

4. Hitting the Big Time

Weaver's career took off in 1979, the year she made her debut as Ellen Ripley the sci-fi/horror classic "Alien."

5. Cha-Ching

Weaver's paycheck for 1997's "Alien: Resurrection" was more than the entire cost of the original "Alien" movie.

6. Started From the Bottom

Weaver's first paid, on-screen role was in Woody Allen's "Annie Hall"; she only took home $50.

7. Stairs Only

Weaver has a known fear of traveling in elevators. At least she doesn't have to be subjected to the terrible music.

8. Queen Status

Weaver has earned the title "Sci-fi Queen," thanks to her numerous roles in sci-fi flicks like "Galaxy Quest," "Avatar," and the "Alien" franchise.

9. Bi-Coastal

While Weaver has always had roots in New York, you may not know that she also spends a great deal of her time living in Santa Barbara, California.

10. Smart Lady

Weaver has a B.A. from Stanford and a Master's of Fine Arts degree from Yale University.

11. Nightmares?

Weaver has admitted that she read the script for "The Village," but turned down the role initially because it gave her nightmares for two weeks.  [Sources: IMDB]
