18 Movies That You Can't Believe Aren't on Blu-ray Yet

Blu-ray has been around for over a decade now, and it's the format of choice for most people who still prefer physical media to streaming (crazy, we know). But even after all this time, there's a surprising number of classic films that have yet to make it to the format. Here are the 18 biggest offenders.

'The Abyss' (1989)

We're flabbergasted that there are still James Cameron films that haven't made the jump to Blu-ray. Particularly this underrated sci-fi drama, whose use of CG effects revolutionized the industry. The great thing about Cameron films is that the effects hold up even decades later.

'Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker' (2000)

"Batman Beyond" spinoff also ranks among the best Batman movies, and it's long overdue for an HD upgrade.

'The Beach' (2000)

"The Beach" isn't a great film, per se, but it does have amazing cinematography and one of the most handsome actors on the planet. Those reasons alone make it a natural choice for Blu-ray, but for whatever reason, Fox doesn't seem to agree.

'The Black Cauldron' (1985)

We're at the point where pretty much every Disney classic has made it's way to Blu-ray, but that still leaves a few of the weirder and more esoteric additions to the canon. A Blu-ray release might help finally draw more eyes to this flawed but ambitious 1985 fantasy film.

'Brotherhood of the Wolf' (2001)

"Brotherhood of the Wolf" is a welcome reminder that some of the best action movies come not from the US or Asia, but France. Loosely based on a real series of 18th Century killings, this lush epic also proves that martial arts movies can still offer great stories and deep characters in between all the carnage.

'The Ghost and the Darkness' (1996)

"The Ghost and the Darkness" is a ridiculous animal horror movie about Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas hunting two massive, man-eating lions. What part of that equation doesn't cry out for a good Blu-ray release?

'A Goofy Movie' (1995)

"A Goofy Movie" easily ranks as the best animated Disney movie still not on Blu-ray. The film tends to languish in the shadow of other '90s gems like "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," and maybe a Blu-ray release would help fix that.

'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter' (1968)

This is the film that introduced Sondra Locke to the world and earned Academy Award nominations for both her and co-star Alan Arkin. How is this not on Blu-ray yet? But maybe that's fitting for a film that's all about loneliness and alienation.

'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' (1989)

A real crowd-pleaser, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" stands firm as one of Disney's better efforts from the '80s. It's past time for the Szalinski family to make the jump to Blu-ray and Antie to come alive in glorious HD.

'Panic Room' (2002)

There should be some sort of law requiring all David Fincher films to be made available on Blu-ray. We're especially puzzled by this omission, since "Panic Room" was previously released on the DVD "Superbit" format in the days before real HD was a thing. Did Sony just forget they own this one?

'The Pianist' (2002)

We're confused as to how a movie can earn such critical acclaim and win Oscars, but still not be on Blu-ray after all this time. "The Pianist" is absolutely one of the best films of 2002, and it's long overdue for an HD release.

'Solaris' (2002)

The original 1972 "Solaris" has received a lavish Blu-ray edition thanks to the Criterion Collection, but where's the love for its 2002 remake? Between the gorgeous visuals and haunting score, this film is practically begging for an HD release.

The Original, Theatrical Cuts of the 'Star Wars' Trilogy

This pretty much tops everyone's list when it comes to most wanted Blu-ray releases. Yes, the original "Star Wars" trilogy is available on Blu-ray, but only in Special Edition form. We want the original, unaltered trilogy -- the one without the dated CG effects, Greedo shooting first, and Vader screaming while he tosses Palpatine down a chasm. Sadly, we're starting to think it's never going to happen at this point.

'True Lies' (1994)

How can one of the biggest and most beloved movies of Arnold Schwarzenegger's career still not be out on Blu-ray?! What gives? Maybe Fox is just waiting for that long-rumored sequel to finally take shape.

'Waking Life' (2001)

2017 is the year Richard Linklater's "Before Trilogy" finally made the jump to Blu-ray. That's great, but we're still waiting on "Waking Life" to follow suit. The film's unique rotoscope animation makes it among the most visually impressive of Linklater's films, yet it remains relegated to DVD.

'The War of the Worlds' (1953)

The original film adaptation of "The War of the Worlds" was a real technical marvel for its day, and even now remains one of the most beloved sci-fi movies ever made. So why is it not on Blu-ray? No wonder the Martians are so angry with us...

'What Lies Beneath' (2000)

You'd think a horror movie directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer would be a shoo-in for Blu-ray, right? Apparently not. "What Lies Beneath" is another underappreciated gem that seems to have just been forgotten after its DVD release.

'The Wizard' (1989)

Sure, it's basically a 90-minute commercial for the Nintendo Entertainment System, but "The Wizard" stands as one of the best video game movies ever (not that this is a particularly high bar). Surely that alone warrants a Blu-ray? With special Power Glove packaging?
