Steinfeld was born in Tarzana, California. Her father, Peter, is a personal fitness trainer while her mom, Cheri, is an interior designer.

Steinfeld is of Romanian and Russian Jewish ancestry. Her grandfather was also of Filipino descent, while her grandmother was English, German, and Irish.
