Emmys 2015: What Will Win Outstanding Drama?

September 18, 2015 - 1 min read

The 2015 Emmy Awards are almost here, so to get you prepared for TV's biggest night Moviefone will be revealing a countdown of editor predictions for the major categories leading up to September 20th's broadcast. Today's category is one of the biggest awards of the evening: Outstanding Drama.

What Will Win: "Mad Men.” It’s won four times before, but look to the Television Academy to give “Mad Men" one final, swan song Emmy. In case it hasn’t sunk in yet: you won’t be seeing Don Draper on your TV screens anymore. If you’re not already crying, you might be when Matthew Weiner and the cast start waxing poetic about the final season from the winners’ podium. We’ll be stocking up on tissues, just in case. What Should Win: “Better Call Saul." We have to admit when we heard Saul Goodman was getting a “Breaking Bad” spinoff we weren’t immediately sold. He just wasn’t our first choice, OK? But we can admit when we’re wrong, and boy were we. The first season of “Saul” is some of the best TV we’ve seen in years and we can’t wait to see where they take us next season. Plus, fans of “Breaking Bad” can appreciate that the show has already dropped some pretty great easter eggs in the form of characters (Raymond Cruz, Tuco) who we first saw cross paths with Walter White. Well played, Vince Gilligan. -Alexis Taylor

What Will Win: “Mad Men.” I’m really just going on the fact that it’s a critically lauded series singing its swan song. Meaning that, since the show is over, this is the last time it can be nominated and will thus be at the top of the list for Emmy voters. What Should Win: “Game of Thrones.” OMG, please give “Game of Thrones” something more than its usual slew of Creative Arts Emmys this year. I’ll admit that this past season hasn’t been the best of the series, but the show -- as a whole -- is a worldwide phenomenon, and the amount of painstaking work that goes into each and every episode is deserving of something more. So get off your high horses, Emmy voters, and give a fantasy series (gasp!) your highest honor. -Tim Hayne

What Will Win: “Mad Men.” After their seventh and final season, Don Draper and Company have put in the time. It will be a sympathy/legacy win, but who cares. “Mad Men” deserves it. What Should Win: “Better Call Saul.” On paper, this shouldn’t have worked. A spin-off of one of the best television shows ever made, centered on a guile-less ambulance chaser with nothing more than a drawer full of burner phones and penchant for snarky remarks. The best surprise of the show’s first season was how much more there was behind the man who would be Walter White’s lawyer. This inspired series is more than just “Saul Begins;” it’s equal parts funny and dramatic, it pulls on the heartstrings and puts us on the edge of our seats. The series is pathological incapable of not being entertaining. One of the best spinoffs ever, I wish I could get my first time back watching it. -Phil Pirrello

What Will Win: “Mad Men.” Honestly, this award could go anyway without the competition from “Breaking Bad” this year. But, seeing as it was the last season of “Mad Men,” it’s fair to say that they could get the farewell Emmy. What Should Win: Like I said, it could go either way, but I’d like to see “Better Call Saul” take it home. Even though “Mad Men” was collectively a good show, the last season wasn’t Emmy worthy. -Rachel Horner

What Will Win/What Should Win: "Mad Men" has picked this win up before, and its the standout favorite among the pack this year. The period drama will be remembered as one of the most important shows ever, thanks to masterful storytelling, stunning visuals, and a brilliant ensemble cast. Plus, they managed to produce a series finale that lives up to the show's legacy. Hats off to Matthew Weiner and company.
