The 10 Biggest Box Office Hits of 2017 (So Far)

Jesse Schedeen
December 13, 2017 - 1 min read

It was a strange year at the box office, with lots of movies that seemed like surefire hits surprisingly crashing and burning. But as 2017 reminded us, you can always bank on superhero movies, Luke, Rey, and scary clowns. Here are the ten highest-grossing movies of the year so far. Bear in mind that all of these figures are current as of 12/14, and that we'll be updating the list with "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" once it rockets its way up the charts.

10. 'Justice League'

Domestic Box Office: $212.9 million Global Box Office: $615.5 million "Justice League" is considered by most to be a box office disappointment. Between the sky-high budget and marketing costs, it likely won't wind up turning a profit for WB. That all being said, it still managed to crack the top ten for 2017 in its first month of release, even with the stiff superhero competition this year.

9. 'The Fate of the Furious'

Domestic Box Office: $225.8 million Global Box Office: $1.236 billion "The Fate of the Furious" is a testament to how important the international market has become for some Hollywood franchises. Domestically, the eight film in the Fast & Furious saga slightly underwhelmed. But globally, it's currently the #2 highest-grossing film of the year.

8. 'Logan'

Domestic Box Office: $226.3 million Global Box Office: $616.8 million "Logan" proved all over again that there's real money to be made in going the R-rated route with superhero movies. The glowing reviews and the fact that this film marked the final outing for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine surely helped bolster the numbers, as well.

7. 'Despicable Me 3'

Domestic Box Office: $264.5 million Global Box Office: $1.032 billion "Despicable Me 3" is another example of the divergent tastes between US and international audiences. While the film's domestic haul fell well short of that of predecessors "Despicable Me 2" and "Minions," its global take was enough to make it #3 for the year.

6. 'Thor: Ragnarok'

Domestic Box Office: $301.7 million Global Box Office: $834.2 million The latest Thor sequel is a real crowd-pleaser. It's already surpassed the grosses of both previous movies, and it'll probably keep raking in the dough over the holiday season.

5. 'Stephen King's IT'

Domestic Box Office: $327.5 million Global Box Office: $695.7 million This year was a real case of good news/bad news for Stephen King adaptations. "The Dark Tower" was pretty much DOA, but "IT" arrived a few weeks later and became the highest-grossing R-rated horror movie of all time. We imagine New Line is thrilled that a sequel was built right into the equation.

4. 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

Domestic Box Office: $334.2 million Global Box Office: $880.2 million "Homecoming" didn't break any records as far as Spider-Man movies are concerned, but it still brought in a very respectable pile of money for Marvel Studios. Perhaps more importantly, it revived the character's cinematic prospects after the disappointing "Amazing Spider-Man" series.

3. 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'

Domestic Box Office: $389.8 million Global Box Office: $863.6 million There were a lot of Marvel movies on tap in 2017, but in the end, "Guardians Vol. 2" beat them all. Who would have guessed even five years ago that a movie starring Rocket Raccoon and Star-Lord would beat out Spider-Man and Wolverine?

2. 'Wonder Woman'

Domestic Box Office: $412.6 million Global Box Office: $821.8 million Anyone who thinks the DC Extended Universe is a lost cause need only look at the record-breaking performance of "Wonder Woman." This film beat out all challengers to become the top-grossing superhero movie of the year and remind studio execs how much money they're leaving on the table by not giving audiences more female-driven projects.

1. 'Beauty and the Beast'

Domestic Box Office: $504 million Global Box Office: $1.264 billion In case you're wondering why Disney is so enamored with remaking classic animated movies in live-action, this is the reason. "Beauty and the Beast" was the first big box office smash of 2017, and it's still the reigning champ even now. At this point, only "The Last Jedi" stands a chance of stealing the crown, and that's a win for Disney either way.
