9 Casting Suggestions for Disney Live-Action Remakes

Sharon Knolle
March 29, 2019 - 1 min read

With just about every Disney movie ever getting a live-action remake, here are some people we'd like to see in iconic roles, from Snow White to Merlin.

Ariel: 'The Little Mermaid,' Ariana Grande

Who's got the voice, the hair (and the fan base) to play our favorite mermaid? Ariana Grande, whose acting roles include "Scream Queens" and "Sam & Cat."

Ursula: 'The Little Mermaid,' Queen Latifah

This Oscar-nominated actress/singer/rapper has definitely got the chops to play the deal-making sorceress under the sea, Ursula.

Snow White, Hailee Steinfeld

"Bumblebee" and "Pitch Perfect 2" star Hailee Steinfeld (an Oscar nominee for "True Grit") is also a Top 40 singer. And probably sings to birds and deer in her spare time.

Evil Queen: 'Snow White,' Eva Green

Who else but Eva Green, who's so good at being bad in "300: Rise of an Empire" and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," could embody the cold-hearted Queen who wants Snow White's heart in a box? (Yes, we loved Charlize Theron in Universal's “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but the reported Disney remake needs its own ruthless ruler.)

Pocahontas: Q'orianka Kilcher

Q'orianka Kilcher (star of "Te Ata" and "The Alienist") already played the Powhatan princess in Terrence Malick's underseen film "The New World," when she was only 14. Would she be game to play the role again? If not, may we suggest "American Gods" star Devery Jacobs?

Madame: 'The Aristocats,' Vanessa Redgrave

Disney hasn't greenlit a remake of this cat-centric '70s film, but we can easily see Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave as elegant Madame, a retired opera diva, who dotes on her cat Duchess and kittens.

Edgar, Richard E. Grant

The Oscar-nominated Brit, who's so good at being charming, inept and utterly bonkers, would be perfect as the dastardly butler who plots to do away with the cats standing in the way of his wealthy employer's inheritance.

Merlin: 'The Sword in the Stone,' Jim Broadbent

Merlin was a bit distracted and off his game in this '70s movie: We can easily see Oscar winner Broadbent (who's been in everything from the Harry Potter films to "Moulin Rouge") as the kindly wizard.

Madame Mim: 'The Sword in the Stone,' Julie Walters

Who would you cast to play a powerful (if somewhat eccentric and short-tempered) witch? Why not Mrs. Weasley herself? We last saw Julie Walters battling bursting kitchen pipes in "Mary Poppins Returns" and an evil Hugh Grant in "Paddington 2." We think she can hold her own with Merlin.
