10 Totally WTF Moments From the MTV VMAs

August 28, 2015 - 1 min read

If there's one award show out there where pretty much anything goes, it's gotta be the MTV Video Music Awards.  Whether it's the crazy fashion, out-there performances, or totally random incidents, the VMAs have continuously left us going... "what just happened?" Let's take a look at some of the most outrageous moments from MTV VMAs past.

Miley Cyrus Twerks With Robin Thicke (2013)

One of the most talked about events of 2013 was Miley Cyrus's wacky, all-over-the-place, perpetual tongue-out performance of "We Can't Stop." In walks pinstripe wearing crooner-du-jour Robin Thicke and the whole thing got even weirder. And it's hard to get weirder than giant twerking teddy bears. Oh, and about that foam finger...

Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)

Country/pop darling Taylor Swift got on stage to accept her award for Best Female Video back in 2009, but was interrupted by none other than a Beyonce-defending Kanye West mid-speech. "Imma let you finish...," he said to a stunned Swift. "But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time." Classic.

Courtney Love Crashes Madonna's Interview (1995)

Let's go back to that time at the VMAs pre-show when Kurt Loder was interviewing Madonna in her Gucci-clad "Bedtime Stories" era and Courtney Love started throwing stuff at them and totally highjacked the interview. This sequence is absolutely mesmerizing (Courtney at one point says she may or may not have lost her virginity to Ted Nugent) and it all culminates in a moving hug with VJ Tabitha Soren. Don't you ever forget it.

Diana Ross (Playfully) Gropes Lil Kim (1999)

Remember when Lil Kim wore a getup complete with an infamous nipple pasty and motown legend Diana Ross decided to reach out and give it a little lift? Ah, the late '90s.

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress (2010) 5/13

The VMAs has had plenty of wacky fashion moments over the years -- but Lady Gaga perhaps topped them all when she showed up in a dress made of meat back for the 2010 show.

Lil Mama Crashes Jay-Z and Alicia Keys's Party (2009)

Perhaps it slipped your mind, but the same year Kanye interrupted Taylor, rapper Lil Mama (of "Lip Gloss" fame) decided to jump on stage at the end of Jay Z and Alicia Keys' 2009 "Empire State of Mind" performance. She later said "emotions were running high" but that doesn't really explain why she felt it was acceptable to join two musical superstars on national TV.

Beyoncé's Baby Reveal (2011)

If you're Queen Beyonce and practically run the world, what's the best way to tell the world you're expecting? Do a pitch-perfect performance of "Love on Top" at the MTV VMAs and open your bedazzled blazer to reveal your baby bump. Now that's how it's done.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley Kiss (1994)

For some reason in 1994, Michael Jackson and his wife of three months, Lisa Marie Presley, opened the VMAs by coming out on stage and smooching for all the world to see. Their famous kiss took place after Michael told the crowd: "Just think, nobody thought this would last."

Fiona Apple's "The World is Bullis--t" Speech (1997)

Singer/songwriter Fiona Apple was a young rising star when she picked up her first moon man in 1997 for her "Criminal" video, but she wasn't about to accept the award like any old pop star. Her speech is one to remember, especially that whole part about the world being bullis--t. Hear that, kiddos?

The Britney / Madonna / Christina Kiss (2003)

Madonna made waves back in 1984 with a groundbreaking performance of her hit "Like a Virgin," but VMA viewers will also never forget her 2003 set with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Spoiler alert: they all kiss.
