9 Best New TV Shows of 2015

So much TV, so little time. As every year passes, more and more new television shows are offered up to hungry viewers for sampling. But what deserves a bite? Here are nine new TV shows that stood out amongst the freshman pack.

'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'

What's funny about being trapped in a doomsday cult bunker for 15 years and then navigating the scary realities of adult life in the Big Apple? Turns out, a lot. 30 Rock" sized void in your queue.

'Better Call Saul'

A spinoff of one of the most beloved series of all time that delivers? Yup. Bob Odenkirk reprises his riveting Saul Goodman role in a gritty, witty, and character-driven AMC series that seriously stands on its own. Questionable legal ethics and a complex leading man make this show dark comedy storytelling at its best.

'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'

The title makes this show like this series would fall flat after 14 minutes or so, but lead Rachel Bloom makes the out-there journey all worthwhile. The series bursts with energy, fun musical numbers, and relatable moments in even the most ridiculous situations.

'Empire'

It feels like "Empire" has already been on for years, considering it's pretty much the most talked-about, hyped series in recent history. Season 2, which premiered September 23, 2015, hasn't received quite the fanfare, but Season 1 deserved every glowing review and think-piece it inspired. Whether you're into hip-hop or not, it's near-impossible to not be entertained by the soapy, shocking, sexy drama. Unless you live under a rock, you're most likely aware that Taraji P. Henson is TV gold as bossy matriarch Cookie Lyon.

'Master of None'

Aziz Ansari's poignant observations on dating, family, showbiz, race, and more shine in this smart and original Netflix comedy. The actor's odyssey through thirty-something modern New York City is a sweet and subtle rom-com for realists. It also happens to be laugh-out-loud funny.

'Mr. Robot'

USA's dark and complex hacker drama doesn't seem like your typical network fare. Paranoid cyber-vigilante extraordinaire Elliot (Rami Malek) takes audiences into a tangled techy web (had to...) full of intrigue, intelligence, and edge-of-your-seat thrills.

'Jessica Jones'

Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones is the superhero we've all been waiting for. She's the gritty, flawed, strong heroine non-comic book fans will root for. "Jones" is a unique Marvel crime-fighting story with a jazzy, sexy noir detective drama backdrop that just works. Prepare to be captivated in the first few moments.

'unREAL'

You do not have to be a fan of dating competition shows like "The Bachelor" to get hooked on Lifetime's "unREAL," although that does make the twisted satire that much more fun. The show-within-a-show goes beyond scandalous soapiness, even though there's plenty of drama. It's a truly gripping behind-the-scenes look at the hard truths of reality TV production and its players and puppeteers. Stars Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer make for extremely compelling leading ladies.

'Catastrophe'

Amazon's "Catastrophe" takes TV romantic comedies to the next level thanks to delightful leads Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan's hilarious chemistry. It's raunchy, sweet, and clever all at once, while avoiding familiar rom-com tropes we've come to expect from that oft-used unplanned pregnancy plot line.
