The “Red Trilogy” is a loose thematic grouping of films by Zhang Yimou, consisting of Red Sorghum (1987), Ju Dou (1990), and Raise the Red Lantern (1991). While not connected through a continuous narrative, the three films are commonly referred to as a trilogy because they share aesthetic and historical concerns, frequently focusing on women’s experiences, societal constraints, and vivid uses of the color red within the cultural and historical backdrop of early twentieth-century China.
