Plot
The Geelong Cats looked to be building up for the finals all season, and shot out of the blocks in their Qualifying Final against the Western Bulldogs, winning by 14 points to gain a week off before the Preliminary Finals. Matthew Scarlett was best on ground with 30 disposals, while soon-to-be Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett had 31. The scoreline was flattering to the Bulldogs, who trailed by 35 points at three-quarter-time.
